The Centennial History
The Royal Hotel Sanremo, owned by the Bertolini family since its foundation by Lorenzo Bertolini in 1872, has preserved its original elegance and luxury to the present day. Ever since the Belle Époque, this hotel has been a favourite haunt of European aristocrats and financiers, artists and royalty, leading lights of culture and Nobel prize-winners. The Rotary Club of Sanremo, the 26th to be created in Italy, was founded here in 1931. The hotel was restored to its former splendours after the Second World War, and its restaurant Fiori di Murano opened in 1947. The following year it became one of the first hotels to open a heated seawater swimming pool, designed by architect Giò Ponti, in its delightful subtropical gardens. In its endeavours to constantly provide impeccably excellent service and ensure the satisfaction of its valued guests, Royal Hotel Sanremo has always been careful to cultivate its image, improving its own rooms and suites as well as its facilities.

When to go
Lying in the north of Italy, within the Liguria region, Sanremo is a popular tourist destination. While much of Italy hosts a fairly idyllic climate, conditions in Sanremo are particularly enjoyable due to its proximity to the Mediterranean and where it lies in the forefront of the Maritime Alps. In places throughout the world where mountain air meets sea air you are met with an enviable microclimate as the crisp winds from the mountain peaks intertwine with the refreshing coastal breezes. The Liguria region as a whole is in a unique and peculiar position, with the whole region seeing a variety of different conditions prevailing due to the effect of the mountains that cross the area. Sanremo is a year round popular destination due to this enviable climate, with mild winters and cooler summers.
The best time to visit Sanremo is throughout summer, where you can really get involved in all the beach side activity that takes place, the promenades are alive with activity and the markets are bustling with bargains and interesting finds. While summer temperatures are the best, the remainder of the year hosts very enjoyable mild conditions. You may be caught in an odd shower from October to December, but there certainly isn’t a shortage of things to do whilst you wait for the rains to pass, the world famous Sanremo casino, built in 1905 is just one way you could pass the time.

Sanremo, without ifs and buts!
Those who intend to visit Liguria (Italy) are undoubtedly spoiled for choice regarding the destination to be fully enjoyed. There’s Ventimiglia (near to the French border) which is for the lazy tourist, or Portofino which is synonymous of top luxury, or inland villages such as Dolceacqua and Apricale are catering to people who seek something radically different from the beach resorts, while Albenga provides a good impression of densely atmospheric, medieval Italy.
But of all possible destinations, Sanremo is possibly the most rewarding, not least because it has a little of everything, combining it into an attractive mix and serving it with a unique style and raffish charm. It is as elegant as Cannes or Antibes, but less self-conscious and less stuffy and generally down-to-earth in the typical manner of the Italian Riviera.
Sanremo, once a place where members of the Romanov family and other crowned heads spent their sunset years, may have lost some of its international luster, but Italians still consider it the most “chic” of their domestic resorts. In Italy, the town is famous for its annual Festival di Sanremo (a music festival), a competition whose style and format are said to have served as the blueprint for the Eurovision Song Contest.
There are also many unpricey family restaurants which are not in business to fleece visitors but because their owners actually enjoy the idea of making food and serving it. Moreover there is a great architecture. The building fabric in Sanremo’s Old Town (called La Pigna) may not be, strictly speaking, medieval but the narrow street patterns certainly are and can make you feel claustrophobic enough.
