Music in journey – Part 2

8 Marzo 2021Danilo Cascone1

What interesting things do you like to do when you travel? Stop taking pictures, discover interesting sights and learn about the culture of the places you visit are some of the things that make the journey enjoyable. However, one thing that almost everyone must consider during any trip is: listening to music. Whether you are traveling on land, water or air, the presence or absence of music can completely change your travel experience.

Music and travel is the perfect combination such as “Nutella and Bread” or “Macaroni and Cheese”. Certainly, when you travel, you will absorb the sounds around you, which is a special joy. As mentioned in the first part, I have made a collection of iconic songs that are unequivocally connected to the world of travel, and here is the second part.

Society – Eddie Vedder

_
Based on the movie masterpiece “Into the Wild” released in 2007, the lead singer of Pearl Jam has the power to thrill everyone, generation after generation. When the American artist’s voice and guitar come together, the ballad, along with the movie’s protagonist, becomes a clear symbol of social protests against modernity, consumerism and the distracting world. They talk about Chris, a young lonely traveler who rejects society and begins to explore the United States on foot, starting from Mexico up to Alaska, with the aim of looking enthusiastically for himself and for the deeper truths. The song in the background enhances the journey and makes it incredibly amazing.

Latinoamerica – Calle 13

_
If you’ve never been to Latin America, this Puerto Rican song may be the right quid to push you to go there. Hip-hop music and Latin rap music are masterfully integrated. On the one hand, it praises South America, its natural beauty, the power and pride of its people, but on the other it condemns its difficult past, exploitation, poverty and social problems. From Maradona’s goal against England in 1986 to the works of Garcia Marquez and Eduardo Galeano, quotations and historical references are everywhere, it is one of the most beautiful dedications ever written to a country (in this case also the entire continent). Before, during and after your trip to South America, this song will capture your emotions and take you there!

Take me home country road – John Denver

_
John Denver, Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert are the absolute main protagonists of this timeless song. Dated 1971, the journey home is the focus of it all. The song is not about a specific house but about the whole West Virginia area in the United States. Denver’s sung country roads wind their way through mountains, rivers, and verdant nature. This song is included in the soundtrack of several movies, as it has been sung and played by other international artists. It is the official song for West Virginia University’s anniversary and graduation ceremony, and also a Manchester United fan choir, a song of eternal beauty.

Miles Away – Years around the sun

_
The sun, the waves, the beach and the pursuit of happiness. Here’s what Miles Away is about. This track is part of a project dated 2010, so it’s new. This song is not that famous to most people, so if you want to impress and show your knowledge in the field of music and travel, you can choose Miles Away and you will have say “Bingo”.

New York – Alicia Keys

_
A love letter to New York. From the very first notes you enter an atmosphere that is that of New York. We live in myths and legends, we remember the adventures of dreamers in our dreams. Even though the world record catalog is full of songs about the Big Apple, none can match the charm of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys in this featuring. This city is many things, but this song shows us its eclectic and contradictory spirit. Something that pushes us to go to the Big Apple!

Sky and Sand – Paul Kalbrenner

_
With its electronic sound and thousands of recognizable profiles, Sky and Sand is one of the popular songs not to be missed in a travel playlist. The work of Paul Kalkbrenner and his brother Fritz, thanks to the movie “Berlin Calling”, manages to become popular everywhere. This movie describes the life of a DJ on a noisy Berlin night. The acidic environment, cutting-edge technology and club music perfectly represent the heartbeat and excesses of this city. The sky and the beach are escape, freedom and rhythm. Whether you are on the dance floor, on the beach of Ibiza or listening to the sea in the car, it is definitely this song that accompanies you on any holiday!

Born to be Wild – Steppenwolf

_
The roar of motorcycles, the long roads, the sixties in America, the hippies, the rebellions, all this is Born to be Wild. Reference song for generations of travelers on the road. Written and recorded by the band Steppenwolf in 1968, this song is an ode to freedom, adventure and love, with simple lyrics and wild and angry music. Linked to the theme of the movie “Easy rider”, this song is also considered the first music of the heavy metal genre, it is a true story!

Mas que nada – Sergio Mendez

_
Pianist and composer Sergio Mendez revisited Jorge Ben’s samba (1963) and brought it to global success a few years later. Please note that it is one of the most representative songs of Brazil. From the opening notes, you will find yourself immersed in this joyful and colorful land, dancing with the rhythms of Pandeiro and Tamborim, musical instruments typical of the green-gold nation…musicality that will never leave your headphones!

If you are going to San Francisco – Scott McKenzie

_
In our opinion the best song for a trip. The song was composed for the promotion of the 1967 Monterey Music Festival but quickly became an incredible success, thanks to the second verse, “Be sure to have flowers in your hair.” It perfectly embodies the spirit of the hippie movement. McKinsey’s songs have been performed by many other artists over the years, including a special bonus as a soundtrack in world-famous movies such as Forrest Gump to name one. So take a flower, put it in your hair and have a good trip!

Rotolando verso sud – Negrita

_
I complete this selection with the second Italian gem which is from 2005 and is signed by the Negrita. With the sound and the atmosphere, we are back in South America, in Brazil, and certainly we are talking about the most emblematic and popular song of this Tuscan band. This song tells us about the band’s journey across the continent, and at the same time considers the journey as a metaphor for a deep search for the self. Guitars, horns, drums, Pau’s voice and the magnificent scenery of South America entered directly into our minds!

What do you think of my selection of 20 songs? What is your favorite? Or tell me if I’ve forgotten any…write it in the comments below!
